1.  Timber species and characteristics:

3 timbers are offered as standard options:

·         NZ plantation grown pine (knot free / ribbon grain )

·         NZ plantation grown macrocapa ( knot free)

·         American Ash ( knot free)

For any other timber preferences call to discuss.

Both Pine and Ash are FSC certified (see Forestry Stewardship Council)

Clear Pine and Macrocapa are both softer than Ash but they each have desirable characteristic. Pine grain is usually seen as a large swirling open grain but when laminated with the edge of a normally milled board facing up, it shows as a tight ribbon grain.

Macrocapa has a bright coloured tight grain not unlike Elm or Cherry

NZ Pine and Macrocapa each have a zero carbon footprint, employing New Zealanders, and sustaining NZ communities. Both are  cheaper than Ash.

Ash is the classic ultimate timber of choice for furniture making, it is hard, stable, machines well and is light in colour and has an open grain structure allowing excellent colour up take when stained. When oil finished, the texture remains open with a beautiful tactile quality. Ash (imported from USA) is both plantation grown and FSC certified.

2. Surface coatings and maintenance:

All of our finishes are oil based. Colours are achieved using coloured stains which are over laid with an extremely durable oil finish. There are 3 standard colours (as below) and natural (natural being clear oil only)

3. Maintenance:

Care of the surface finish, when required, is either a wipe with soft cloth and a special cleaning solution that comes with your product and if needed can be followed by wiping on more finishing oil (also supplied). The benefit of an oil finish is that the tactile and visual qualities remain, as opposed to standard lacquer finishes which are essentially a plastic coating that eliminate both of these very subtle but desirable qualities of natural wood.

This method of finishing wooden furniture is standard in all Scandinavian countries and is regarded as a seasonal maintenance ritual …. a caring and recognition of the special natural qualities of wood in an otherwise often ‘plastic’ world.

4. Upholstery Options:

The Planar dining chair has the option of either fabric or leather and is of your choice from your chosen fabric outlet. The chair requires 1.4 M per chair.
